HygieneScout exists because checking food hygiene ratings should be simple. The Food Standards Agency publishes inspection data for over 600,000 food businesses — but their official site is a basic search tool with no location pages, no context, and no history.
We take the same public data and make it genuinely useful. Every town, every council area, every postcode district gets its own page with rating distributions, score breakdowns, and contextual information. You can browse by city, filter by rating or business type, and compare areas through our rankings.
All food hygiene data comes from the Food Standards Agency API, published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. We sync the full dataset daily at 3am to capture new inspections and rating changes. See our data sources page for full details.
HygieneScout is built and maintained as an independent project. We are not affiliated with the Food Standards Agency or any local authority. Our goal is to make public food safety data more accessible and useful for consumers.
